Game
Report.
Carrickfergus
running back David Wright, who had close to 200 yards rushing and
scored two touchdowns, was the star performer in the Knights win
over local rivals, the Belfast Bulls. The Knights running game,
helped by a great performance by their offense line including Rob
Velasquez, Jake Andrews and Paul Braniff was the difference between
the two teams.
The
first quarter started with key fumbles by both teams. Knights linebacker
Scott Robinson took away a scoring opportunity from the Bulls after
recovering a fumble deep in his own half. The Knights then fumbled
the ball on their next possession when a sack by the Bulls defensive
line, led by Carl Ward, caused a fumble which was recovered by Belfast.
Later in the opening quarter, the Knights got the first score of
the day when Clinton McDowell broke free on a running play and sprinted
65 yards to the endzone for a touchdown. The Knights defense then
came up with key turnover late in the quarter when Darren Montgomery
recovered an errant Bulls punt snap. The Knights quickly converted
this turnover into a score thanks to a 7 yard run by Wright. The
Knights had one more scoring opportunity in the first half, but
missed a 27 yard field goal mid way through the second quarter.
The
third quarter was marked by scoring drives – one by each team.
The Bulls got into scoring range first thanks to some scrambling
by Mike Calo, running by Marty Devlin and some receptions by receiver
Bjorn Blythe. Rookied running back then caught a 7 yard touchdown
pass from Mike Calo to bring the Bulls back within one score of
the Knights. The Knights then punt together drive with Wright getting
most of the carried to get deep into the Bulls half. Wright then
converted scored from 12 yard out to restore the Knights 12 point
lead. The Knights then put together another scoring drive late in
the quarter – tight end Clinton McDowell took a reverse hand-off
and scored from 30 yards out.
The
Bulls went to the air in the fourth quarter as they tried to close
the Knights lead. Receiver Bjorn Blythe got them a first and goal
after pulling in a 58 yard pass from Mike Calo. Calo then ran a
bootleg from 4 yards out to score the Bulls second touchdown. The
Knights offense then did a good job of controlling the clock on
offense through the remainder of the game, forcing the Bulls to
continue to pass without any scoring success. The Knights victory
lifts them to 4-2. The Bulls fall to 2-3.

Game
Report.
The
Rebels won in Cork thanks to two second half touchdowns in a game
that included a good solid defensive performance by both teams.
The Admirals probably had the best of the first half, but the Rebels
managed to take advantage of their opportunities to score in the
second half to get the win which moves them to 5-0 in the IAFL standings.
The
first score of the game came in the opening quarter when fullback
Simon Mackey broke free for a 26 yard touchdown run. The Admirals
levelled up the score in the second quarter when Willy O’Brien
caught a 3 yard pass from quarterback Dave Lomasney. Defensive linemen
on both teams played well throughout the game – Al Kelly and
Paul Smyth for the Rebels and Chris Gaughan and James Lordan for
the Admirals.
The
second half started in a similar manner to the first with both defenses
playing well. However, a time went by the Rebels began to take advantage
of their chances. Quarterback Andy Dennehy hit receiver Carl Faichney
for a 21 yard touchdown pass to give the Rebels the lead late in
the third quarter. The Rebels then sealed the game in the fourth
quarter with a long touchdown run by Paul Calner.
