Report:
The
Cork Admirals yesterday (July 23rd) clinched the final playoff spot
with a 42-0 home win against the Belfast Bulls. The win also meant
the Admirals finished with a 4-3-1 record, the first time the club
has recorded a winning record in the IAFL.
In
a close fought game in near perfect conditions the Admirals defense
opened the scoring. Paul Buchanan chased down the Bulls ball carrier
after a penalty had sent the visitors deep in their red-zone. The
Admirals offensive line, including Patrick DuBoucher, Robert Hennessy,
Rich Bos and Chris Gaughan, played well on the units opening series,
Keith O'Callaghan finished off a good drive led by the excellent
blocking up-front with a 7yd score.
The
next score was a breakaway 70yd score by O'Callaghan after crushing
blocks from Buchanan and Alain Pezeron opened a running lane.
The
Bulls defense made good adjustments during the second quarter, resulting
in some ineffective possesions for the home team attack. The Admirals
defense played well in this period with John Duggan and Peter Lucey
recording interceptions. At halftime the score was 14-0 in favour
of the Cork side.
Some
adjustments at halftime managed to get the Admirals offense out
of its slump. Alain pezeron scored from 9 yards out on a drive that
was set up by a long Willy O'Brien reception. Pezeron also scored
his second TD during this period, breaking tackles for a hard fought
score.
During
the fourth quarter O'Callaghan and McBratney added to the Admirals
lead. The Cork defense, including Ibrahim Khadra, John O'Sullivan
and Barry Rafferty, played well during the second half to hold off
the Belfast attack and ensure a 42-0 win, and playoff berth.

Report:
The
Carrickfergus Knights secured home field advantage in the semi-finals
and ended the Dublin Dragons hopes of reaching the semis with a
one score victory in a defensive game at Lucan, Dublin.
There
were some fine displays on defense in the first half as both teams
battled in hot conditions. Both defenses produced important turnovers
to stop opposition drives - the Knights Ian McIlroy had and interception
in his own half and the Dragons defense recovered a forced fumble
also while defending in their own half. Top performers on each side
included Mark Harris, Robert Clugston and Scott Robinson for the
Knights and Nick Newby, Lez Connolly and Dave Wheeler for the
Dragons.

making a catch against the Dragons.
After
the halftime break, the Knights came out strong on offense, putting
together a 70 yard drive mainly through the running of Darren Montgomery
and David Wright. After getting into scoring range, Montgomery scored
a touchdown from 1 yard out third down and goal to give the Knights
a 7-0 lead after the conversion. The Knights continued to control
the ball and the clock when on offense and on their next possession,
aided also by a couple of McKillop catches, their running game got
them their second touchdown. This time it was scored by David Wright
from 12 yards out. The Knights Scott Robinson also had an important
interception in the fourth quarter.

The
Dragons, needing the win to have a chance of qualifying for the
semi-finals then attempted to stage a fourth quarter comeback. Their
offense had some success in the quarter, with Robert Popciobobartepelus
and Barry Reynolds each picking up some yardage. With less than
2 minutes remaining in the game, Reynolds broke free and ran 51
yards to the endzone to make the score 13-7 with the conversion.
Needing a second touchdown to score, the Dragons attempted an on-side
kick, but it was recovered by the Knights to effectively end the
game. The Knights now play at home against the Univ of Limerick
Vikings in the Shamrock Bowl semi-finals on 6th August.
