Game Report:
The University of Limerick Vikings opened the 2007 season on high note with a dominating victory over the Tallaght Outlaws Sunday afternoon in Limerick. Running back Daniel Levy collected over 150 yards rushing during the first half behind the dominant run blocking of offensive linemen Kenny Smead, Mark Thompson, Jamie O’Brien, Brendan Moroney, and Jamie Strowbridge. TE/DE Glenn Carr had a dominating performance as well, harassing the Outlaws backfield all game long and springing Levy for some key runs with his downfield blocking.

The Outlaws’ inexperience showed early on. Successive fumbles ultimately resulted in a defensive TD for the Vikings when Glen Carr dove on a lose ball in the end zone. On the next series, the Vikings’ defence forced Tallaght into a three and out. The ensuing punt was disrupted by the Vikings, resulting in good field position for Limerick. On the very next play, Limerick found pay dirt with an elusive 25 yard TD run from Levy.

After another three and out series from the Outlaws, Vikings’ safety Seamus Hogan returned the resulting punt down the right sidelines for a spectacular TD behind a convoy of Limerick blockers. The return was, however, negated by an illegal block.

Limerick continued to dominate the first half as QB Liam Ryan moved the ball efficiently up and down the field. Levy and WR Marc Ashworth moved the ball into the Outlaws territory, where FB Andrew Gordon crashed up the middle from 3 yards out.

After being forced into their only punt of the game, the Vikings’ defence stifled the Outlaws once again when Carr sacked the QB for a safety. Seamus Hogan returned the free kick for another touchdown, which was again negated.

The first half ended on a high note for the Vikings when Levy broke free for a spectacular 47 yard touchdown. After Tallaght was forced to punt on the very next series, Liam Ryan took the Vikings offence down the field and found Marc Ashworth in the end zone from 15 yards out to put the Vikings up 38 – 0 at halftime.

The Vikings continued their dominance on the first play of the second half, when Levy, behind a crushing block by OG Moroney, took the ball in from 43 yards out. He was then relieved by RBs Barry Carmody and Adrian Garvey, both of whom found yardage behind the Vikings’ offensive line. The final score came when QB Liam Ryan, on an option play, decided to keep the ball himself, cutting and dashing his way into the end zone from 25 yards out.

The Outlaws began to show promise during the fourth quarter, when their QB, Daniel Davies, completed some key passes downfield to Dave O’Neill through some holes in the Vikings’ secondary. However the drive was brought to an abrupt halt by a spectacular interception from SS Michael Guinane. The Outlaws rallied one more time through the sheer will of QB Davies and never lay down. In the end the Vikings’ defence, led by standout performances from Glen Carr, Bill Parkinson, and Seamus Hogan, was able to preserve the shutout and seal the deal for the Shamrock Bowl runner-ups.
