IRISH SPORT UNITES IN APPEAL TO GOVERNMENT TO PROTECT SPORT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

IRISH SPORT UNITES IN APPEAL TO GOVERNMENT TO PROTECT SPORT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

–          Submission to Minister for Sport

–          Highlights Vital Role of Government Investment in the Development of Sport in Ireland

–          Cuts Today Will Set Back Sport For Decades to Come

–          Sports Funding Already Down by 62% since 2008

Irish sport has once again united in making a submission to Government highlighting the vital role played by Government funding in the development of Irish sport.  In a submission made on behalf of everyone involved in Irish sport, the national sporting organisations pointed out the damage that will be done to sport in Ireland if Government was to make drastic cuts in the current funding of sport in this country.

Their clear message was that major cuts made today will set Irish sport back for decades to come.

Last year a total of €49.6 million in taxpayer’s money was invested in the development of all Irish sport.

Joining today in making the submission are the GAA, FAI, IRFU, GUI, Olympic Council of Ireland, the Paralympics Council, Special Olympics Ireland and the Federation of Irish Sports (FIS) which represents the governing body of 68 sports in Ireland.  All of the sports represented by the FIS have given full backing to the submission.
The submission to Government was presented to the Minister for Sport, Ms Mary Hanafin, earlier today, Thursday, 18 November, by a delegation of sportsmen and sportswomen. Representing Ireland’s sporting community were Paul O’Connell (Rugby), Lar Corbett (Hurling), Katie Taylor (Boxing), Stephen Rice (Soccer), Andrew Bree (Swimming), Claire O’Connor (Camogie), Garrett Culliton (Paralympics) and Robert Deegan (Special Olympics).
The submission document to Government fully acknowledges the difficult economic climate and the challenges for Government in where to invest taxpayer’s money in the next budget.  It does make the point, however, that the money invested in sport works at many different levels and has impacts for everyone whether that be in terms of health, the economy, tourism or the very fabric of the community in Ireland.

The submission lists all of the activities made possible by Government funding each year and it also points out that any reduction in such funding is likely to have major effects right across the sporting spectrum.

It also notes strongly that at a time when Ireland’s stock has never been lower internationally that our sports stars continue to be an immense source of pride to Irish people all over the world.  It notes that without exception those individual teams that the country is so proud of have all benefited from the funding that the Government has put into Irish sport down through the years.  It also notes that the impact of any cuts in funding will not necessarily be felt immediately but will impact on Ireland’s international successes in the decades to come.

In an open letter to Government in the submission the governing bodies make the point that this is about “the positive effects of sport at every level not just to elite participants important as they are to us all.  What other aspect of life in Ireland gets 270,000 people to volunteer their time on a weekly basis to ensure that 1.7 million people participate in sport in 12,000 clubs in every parish in Ireland.”

The submission also makes the point that contrary to a popular misconception that sport just happens that nothing could be further from the truth.  “Sport as we know it in Ireland today is the result of good planning, enlightened administration and financial investment particularly by the Government on behalf of all taxpayers.  That funding is the lifeblood of sport in Ireland and the catalyst for all that follows”.

“It would be difficult to over emphasise just how important the impact of €49.6 million given to sport through the Irish Sports Council.  It is the seed capital for activity and an industry worth in excess of €1.8 billion to Ireland each year. It must be remembered that only a small proportion of the Government funding goes to elite performers.  Over 80% of the money provided by the Government is invested in sport at grassroots level in creating the programmes that will produce top class athletes and just as importantly help improve the health and well being of our citizens”.

The submission further makes the point that funding for sport has never been more important.  “Right across the country clubs at all levels are finding that other sources of funds are drying up.  They are finding it increasingly difficult to attract sponsorship, while the subscriptions normally paid by club members are becoming increasingly challenging to collect.”

The submission also makes the point that for every euro invested by the Government the sports themselves invest a further €2.  It notes that recent research found that for every €100 invested by Government (both national and local), the return to the Exchequer is €149.

Navy & Notre Dame to play in Dublin.

The Irish American Football Association (IAFA) is pleased to announce that a major NCAA game is due to take place in Ireland.

Navy will face Notre Dame in the newly constructed Aviva Stadium on Saturday 1st September 2012. The game will be a full NCAA regular season game and the outcome is expected to have a major effect on both teams National Championship prospects. Both teams have visited Dublin in the past, having played against each other in Croke Park, Dublin in November 1996. On that occasion, Notre Dame won 54-27.

“To see this stadium is to believe it has to be one of the finest venues in the world,” said Navy Athletic Director, Chet Gladchuk. “Although modest in capacity, few stadiums anywhere have attended to the detail, aesthetics and fan comfort found at Aviva. I guarantee those who travel to Ireland and attend this event will enjoy an experience that will be awesome and a memory not to be forgotten. Navy is very much looking forward to our visit and the wonderful experience we expect our coaches, players, fans and friends will enjoy.”

Aviva Stadium, Dublin.

“We are all delighted that Navy has chosen Aviva Stadium for its game against Notre Dame in 2012,” said Aviva Stadium Director Martin Murphy. “We fully realize just how important this game is in the U.S. sporting calendar and we are looking forward to hosting what will undoubtedly be a fantastic event. The selection of Aviva Stadium for this game is a huge endorsement of the stadium and it is a terrific boost for Irish tourism as I have no doubt the teams’ fans will travel in great numbers. We are confident they will have a memorable time in Ireland.”

The Navy-Notre Dame rivalry is the longest continuous intersectional rivalry in college football with the two schools having met every year since 1927. The 84th meeting between the two schools will take place on Saturday, Oct. 23, at the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutheford, N.J. Kickoff is set for 12 noon and will be nationally televised by CBS.

Navy and Notre Dame will be the first NCAA teams to visit Ireland since John Carroll University, Adrian College and CMU played Irish opposition in the Celtic Classic series of games between 2004 and 2007. The Aviva Stadium is built on the site of Lansdowne Road stadium which hosted NCAA games involving Boston College, Army, Pittsburgh & Rutgers in the 1980s.

The sport of American football has made some significant strides in Ireland over the past decade with membership of the IAFA increasing 10 fold over that period. This increase in interest in the sport, and the consequential larger fan base, has now made Ireland and viable and attractive venue for major games.

Details of how to obtain tickets will be released closer to the game.

The University of Limerick Vikings made their international debut in impressive fashion claiming the EFAF Atlantic Cup II narrowly defeating Netherland’s Lelstad Commanders 19-18 on Sunday, June 27 in Belfield, Dublin.

The EFAF Atlantic Cup is the Western European Championship for amateur clubs with the intent in providing teams with gaining international experience and getting used to a higher level of competition.  The Challenge Cup provides the same opportunity for teams from countries in Eastern Central Europe.

For three of the four Atlantic Cup participants, this tournament was their first international competition as the Luxembourg Dragons are the only team that played in the 2009 Atlantic Cup. The three other federations nominated different teams – as Brussels Bulls represented Belgium this year, the Vikings qualified for their 2009 Shamrock Bowl victory, and Netherlands selected the Lelstad Commanders to represent their country.

The Atlantic Cup II proved to a thrilling game as the Commanders came out strong and held a 12-3 lead at start of the fourth quarter.  Not giving up, the Vikings with the leadership of Quarterback Liam Ryan – who was named 2009 University of Limerick Vikings Offensive Player of the Year – made a heroic comeback with two fourth quarter touchdowns.

The tying touchdown was scored with only 51 seconds remaining and from a drive which saw the Vikings covert a fourth and long with a reception thrown by quarterback Liam Ryan to a receiver down field. Adrian Garvey’s extra point proved to be the winning score.

The Vikings defeated Luxembourg’s Dudelange Dragons 58-14 in the semi-final to earn a spot in the EFAF Atlantic Cup II championship game.

Along with the Vikings three consecutive Irish American Football Shamrock Bowl titles, this victory makes the UL Vikings the first Irish team to win a major International championship.

The Atlantic Cup title earned the University of Limerick Vikings the honor of being ranked as one of the top 20 teams in the EFAF in 2010 being named number 19. The Vikings are the first team to achieve a top 20 ranking since the Dublin Celts in 1990.

This is a remarkable achievement for a team from Ireland considering that EFAF currently has 20 member countries and several hundred clubs.
