Trojans win IAFL North Division

Carrickfergus Knights 0 – 43 Belfast Trojans

The Belfast Trojans celebrated winning the IAFL North division in style, beating rivals the Carrickfergus Knights 43-0. The Trojans, who two weeks earlier secured the division title with a win against Craigavon, were firing on all cylinders in a heated encounter. After struggling on their opening two drives, it was Belfast who finally got on the board thanks to Rick Duffield’s field goal. It was shortly 9-0 however after a Knights kick returner had a ‘brain-neutral’ play, leaving a kick off to bounce around untouched, to be recovered by special teams star Scott Fischaber. Quarterback James McKelvey duly picked up the one yard for the score. The Trojans defence was in impressive form and once again gave their offence good field position. McKelvey called his own number from close range for his second touchdown after he found receiver David Richardson on a classic back shoulder fade route.

Into the second half and a crucial stand by the Trojans defence to open proceedings allowed the offence to get back to work and David Colvin added to his impressive touchdown haul this season diving over the plane for six points after more smash-mouth running play. Not to be outdone, brother Chris Colvin intercepted a wayward pass from the Knights signal caller and took it all the way to paydirt, to cap a two interception day for the rookie. The Trojans added two more scores, with the McKelvey-Richardson partnership clicking once more beating double coverage for the touchdown, before Neil Montgomery rumbled his way over from close range. With the north division secured, the Trojans will gear up for the playoffs with two tough clashes with Cork and Dublin.
