Vikings defeat Dragons in Dublin

Vikings beat Dragons 61-0 in Santry

Written by S Holt

This week the UL Vikings’ show rolled into Baile Átha Cliath for a showdown with the Dublin Dragons. The Vikings continued their current form playing well on both sides of the ball. This week, Adrian Garvey lined up under center at quarterback and Marc Ashworth took up the roll at Tailback with the result being the same. The Vikings took the opening kickoff down field then the drive seemed to have stalled when Garvey bulldozed his way 25 yards for the opening score. That was followed by another Garvey dash through the Dragons defence for a 47 yard touchdown to close out the 1st quarter.

It was an all around performance by Mr. Garvey as his talents weren’t confined to the ground as he hit Seán Goldrick for a 14 yard touchdown pass to open the 2nd quarter. On the proceeding kick-off, the Dragons muffed the kickoff giving poor field position. This lead to pressure from Mike Guinane and Darragh O’Callahan forcing the Dragon quarterback to step out of the back of the end zone for a safety. This set up yet another Garvey to Goldrick touchdown pass, this time for 36 yards. The next Dragons’ drive was derailed when Killian Vigna deflected a pass where an on waiting Kieran Coen jumped on it with cat like reflexes. This time it was Marc Ashworths’ time to rumble into the end zone from 4 yards out. After another stalled Dragons’ drive, Adrian Garvey hit Brendán Curtain for a 62 yard touchdown pass to finish out the 2nd quarter.

The Garvey show concluded in the 3rd quarter after he steamrolled the Dragons’ defence for a 58 yard touchdown. Again, a lot of the success on offence was created by the aggressive play of the offensive line from Joe McGrath, Ryan Mesches, Mark Thompson, and Darren and Shane Gleeson. The Dragons were continually stifled bythe Vikings defence which led to a fumble recover by Pat Noonan setting up a good field position again for the offence. This time it was the swift footed Paul Keane at quarterback as he flashed for a 12 yard touchdown. The scoring was concluded when Craig Switzer picked off the Dragons QB and raced 42 yards downfield for a defensive touchdown. The final score was UL Vikings 61 Dublin Dragons 0. The
